Political ontology and equality in Jacques Rancière’s political thought

The article interprets Rancière’s conception of equality. It argues that equality in Rancière primary means an absence of value-hierarchy and refers to the existence of an unspecified multiplicity. Equality is the absence of any pre-determined inequality. By genuine politics Rancière means either a situation of undetermined equality or an active attempt to recover such a state of equality in disagreement with the settled hierarchy of a political order. Rancière’s political ontology is not essentialist, but constitutes a polemic stance in relation to the standard interpretation of political philosophy as centred on questions concerning the just political order.
