Manipulation and causal explanation: von Wright imprisoned by logic

The article presents von Wright's largely forgotten formal basis for his manipulability view of causation: a theory of causal explanation and reasoning based on tree-diagrams and necessary and sufficient conditions. This theory is compared to the modern interdisciplinary interventionist theory of causal reasoning. Although von Wright's theory came close to modern formulations, its further development and application was hindered by the theory's adherence to philosophical modal logic and von Wright's dismissal of the use of functional dependency in the formalization of causal reasoning.
